Bad Flamingo - “Hold Up the Lighter”
The mysterious duo from the USA, Bad Flamingo, return to the blog with their new track, “Hold Up the Lighter.”
“Hold Up the Lighter” makes me think that maybe Prince has drifted down on his velvet cloud to hand Bad Flamingo the keys to his “Paisley Kingdom.” The song is a slow-grooving and slick indie rock track with a playful flirtation of what I would describe as Minneapolis funk… but there are no sugary synths on this number– instead, we are treated to sensual textures from the keys. Starting stripped back, with Robert Fripp ebow-like uses of electric guitar, Bad Flamingo take their time to ensure that we are fully immersed in the sultry crawl of the composition. As the percussion lands at the half way mark, you will be totally under their seductive, hypnotic spell.
It is the vocal performance that really stands out on this track. Pure silk, crossed with smoke, the weathered and whispered delivery is rich in a haunting intimacy that we have become quite accustomed to when it comes to these tunes from Bad Flamingo. Not only does the performance bring the dusky allure of the music alive, but it also beautifully animates the evocative lyrics that are full of late-night promises.
“Hold Up the Lighter” doesn’t just build on the effortless cinematic cool of Bad Flamingo; it leans a little further into the shadows, trading some of their sublime Americana grit for something a touch more nocturnal and otherworldly. Hit that play button; this is a track you won’t forget.
