Tommy Ashby - “Liar Liar”
Scottish singer-songwriter Tommy Ashby returns to us with “Liar Liar,” the latest single from his new LP, Mantis.
Our fondness for Tommy Ashby is no big secret, as we have featured every tune he’s sent over to us– at this point, far too many to count. While “Liar Liar” maintains his distinct talent for delivering raw and intimate folk music, after the acoustically-driven introduction, the vintage-tinged rhythm enables the track to enter the realm of pop-rock, with a vibe as gentle as the softer offerings from Fleetwood Mac.
Of course, as with all of Ashby’s work, the vocal performance in “Liar Liar” is one of the track’s true highlights, providing an intimate multilayered snapshot of authentic cinematic indie folk. If you have yet to hear any of his tunes, you are truly missing out, as his voice has a way of entering your ears and immediately tunneling its way to the center of your earthly existence.
After a brief guitar lead that is wrapped in Ashby’s delicate falsetto, “Liar Liar” offers a dynamic break that divides the song into two sections, allowing the hypnotic groove to completely mesmerize the listener. For a song that delves into the subject matter of deceit, it is ironically magical and uplifting as it enters the ears– this is no accident…
Ashby adds: “I really liked the idea of writing a happy song about being a liar. Someone who was entirely joyful about their lying capability, like when you see a baddie in a film strutting off into the distance looking pleased with themselves. Liar Liar is also about the little lies that everyone tells every day that I think make them a good person. Or things they keep to themselves. I didn’t want a song about lying to be too sad or morose, I wanted it to sound like a strange slightly wonky bop.”
