Bad Flamingo - “Oh My My”

It’s been almost a year since we first discovered the music of Bad Flamingo, and we still have no idea who they are or where they’re from. All we know is that they keep sending us songs that sound like nothing we’ve ever heard before– and as cliché as that might be to say, we challenge you to find anything that comes anywhere close to their signature ‘indie-Americana-spaghetti-western-folksy-lo-fi’ creations.

We are very pleased to inform you that the duo’s freshly squeezed single, “Oh My My” is no exception to the aforementioned rule. It’s got vibe… It’s got twang… It’s got those distinct, soft and seductive vocals… You are truly doing yourself a disservice by not already having Bad Flamingo inside of your ears. This firecracker of a folk song sounds as though it was scraped directly from the hot sand of the Mojave, beginning with a lo-fi guitar lick and accompanied by some simple, stomped-out percussion.

The vocals appear seconds later and it’s as though we’ve been holding our breath in the months since the release of “Mountain Road.” Not only do these gals breathe new life into a predominantly dusty genre, but they have forever secured us as fans who would do dang-near anything for that next Bad-Flamingo-fix. And though the production expands as more instruments are added on the hook, the refrain is so easy to memorize that it will become lodged in your brain for days and days on end.

As with most cuts from the Bad Flamingo catalogue, “Oh My My” is filled with many servings of ear candy, most of which are genre appropriate, along with others that– and we cannot say this enough– would be perfect for the next Sergio Leone-adjacent film. This song soars in its peaks and slithers through its valleys, crescendoing when it needs to and easing back for suspense. It’s the kind of music that was made to be in films, but it’s also the kind of music that will inspire films to be made.
