Bree Rusev - “Burn Out”

Newcastle, Australia-based singer-songwriter Bree Rusev arrives on the blog with her latest cut, “Burn Out,” a song that “acknowledges those relationships that are lost as we move through life.”

In contrast to its subject matter, this surprisingly upbeat folk song starts the listener off with some remarkably finger-plucked acoustic guitar, with a subdued kick drum stamping out the rhythm. While the track remains reasonably sparse at its inception, Rusev uses her glorious voice to fill out the remaining room in the production. It is immediately apparent that she was born to sing and she has one of those voices that already sounds famous. Some deep bass notes and tambourine soon join the arrangement at about thirty seconds deep, widening an already seamless soundscape.

The hook, of course, is where Rusev has completely won us over. With its magnificent harmonies and upbeat rhythm, it almost makes the process of ‘burning out’ feel more like a celebration than something that we should waste time worrying about. It could also be a reflection of how commonplace it has become to feel this way, though we are not usually keen on speculation, and this song will, more than likely, mean something else entirely to the next set of ears that it enters.

Burn Out” is one of those songs that would sound fantastic in any venue– whether being performed in someone’s living room, echoing through a coffeehouse, or setting the mood before an entire sold-out arena– it is quite clear that it would be well-received on all accounts.
