Luna Keller - “Holy”
Cologne-based Luna Keller seems to always know exactly how to land her craft within our dark, folksy niche. Today, she returns to the blog with “Holy,” a tune that contemplates the connection people have with their own darkness.
“Holy” initially enters the ears with a multilayered a cappella vocal arrangement, slightly reminiscent to the way that Lord Huron’s “The Night We Met” dishes out an emotionally-charged wallop. And because TNWM is simply one of the greatest songs ever written, it should come as no surprise that Keller’s tune quickly seeps into the folds of our grey matter.
This multi-tracked wave of ghostly vocal harmonization remains nestled beneath the arrival of an acoustic guitar, acting as a sonic pad throughout the production. Keller’s main vocal line emerges with “Been praying to God as an atheist/ Making a list of things I don’t believe in.” From top to bottom, lyrical content to execution, “Holy” gently chisels itself into the fibers of our earthly existence.
On the refrain, these layers push themselves forward in the mix, with additional elements finding their sonic position, including a gentle percussive performance that provides some momentum. For the second verse, Keller elevates her initial delivery with a dominant harmony, allowing “Holy” to naturally saturate the soundscape. With a subtle accompaniment from a string section, this song has everything you could ever hope for.
After the second chorus, “Holy” dispatches an intimate dynamic breakdown that consists of Keller’s vocal and some chunky chords from the acoustic guitar. This section wonderfully crescendos with some call-and-response vocal stylings before ultimately sending us into the final throws of the song’s hook.
