Luna Keller - “Invisible Wars”

Germany-based singer-songwriter Luna Keller is no stranger to our blog. Today, she returns to us with “Invisible Wars,” the second single from her soon-to-be-released sophomore album, Ocean Inside of Me.

We are quite familiar with the sunless pits of emotion, and we tend to be drawn to artists who delve into this darkness. So when we learned that Keller’s “Invisible Wars” is a deeply personal song that journeys through the frustrating and lonely battle with depression, our interest was immediately piqued.

Keller begins her passionate vocal performance as soon as you press play. Accompanied by a guitar, she provides a vivid picture of one who is so used to drowning in emotion that the agony is mistaken for the comforts of home. This is bound to resonate with many listeners, as a great deal of music comes from a similar place– there are even those who live in fear that the darkness will abandon them, leaving them with no fuel for their artistry.

The pre-chorus enters our ears very gently, wrapped in layers of ghostly backing vocals, yet building a slight sense of urgency for the ensuing storm of the refrain. It is here where “Invisible Wars” wields its power, complete with cinematic and orchestral percussive elements that add a substantial width to the production. A string arrangement glides through the top of the sonic space, rounding out the sound to create a dramatic ebb and flow between verse and chorus.

It is within this undulation that “Invisible Wars” proves that there is definitely some merit in the correlation between mental health and creativity. The track carries you away on a sonic roller coaster, much like the way many people spend their days amidst the dramatic fluctuation of their own emotions. While Keller’s new record explores her own struggles, spanning ‘from dark to light,’ we are very thankful that she has the courage to first share the darkness.
