Pearla - “To Love Something”

From New York, Pearla has just released “To Love Something,” a dreamy, folk-pop morsel of sound that hits the listener in all the right places.

After the initial, kaleidoscopic and Beatles-esque onset, “To Love Something” filters into an acoustically-driven dreamland, led by a tender and intimate vocal performance. Pearla possesses the kind of voice that has the remarkable trait of sounding as though she’s telling you all of her secrets– the way you’d imagine Adrianne Lenker narrating her private journals. It is immediately captivating and we became fans as soon as it entered our ears.

Amidst the vintage-tinged rhythm section, sporadic cries of pedal steel add dynamic width between the lines of lyrics, with subtle layers of auxiliary vocals leaving a lasting impression on anyone within earshot. And if that were not enough to reel you in, Pearla’s upper register on the second verse will most assuredly win you over.

The refrain has been carefully crafted by the adding and removing of layers, complete with a vocal that aligns with a staccato, descending scale on the acoustic guitar, supplying “To Love Something” with a hefty dose of ebb and flow. But even with its fairly robust arrangement, the track never abandons its vulnerable character and there is never a moment where you doubt that it’s being performed right in front of you.
