néomí - “Sit Back Baby”

Everyone’s favorite Surinamese/Dutch singer-songwriter Neomi Speelman, aka néomí, is back on the blog with “Sit Back Baby,” the final single from her new EP, Another Year Will Pass.

We’ve been covering every song that néomí sends our way, and once you hear this savory blend of indie folk and poetic alt-pop, you will understand why we simply cannot resist her sound. “Sit Back Baby” begins with the gentle strums of acoustic guitar, with some French horn pitching a melancholic melody across the top.

Moments later, a moderately upbeat rhythm section arrives, instilling the track with a Fleetwood Mac kind of vibe. That said, néomí bears a voice that is all her own, making it quite obvious her mighty grip on the heart of indie. Additional layers of electric guitar emerge as the refrain falls into position, unveiling a wondrous harmony that enters the ears as though a dream.

To imbue “Sit Back Baby” with some ebb and flow, néomí adds and removes elements in the transitions from verse to chorus, then deploys a vulnerable bridge just past the song’s midpoint. Complete with breathy moments of delicate falsetto, this chill little number is bound and determined to work its way into all of your favorite playlists.
