néomí - “so i let you”

Surinamese/Dutch singer-songwriter Neomi Speelman, aka néomí, has just released the captivating and euphoric dream pop single, “so i let you (15th of june - evening).”

The song is a rich blend of electronic, pop, and indie rock textures. The verses are founded around intimate, fingerpicked acoustic guitar that weaves melodically, elegantly drawing the listener into the composition. Subtle padding layers, which sound like reversed sounds, add a dreamy flair underneath, heightening the sense of meditative reflection. These layers are vivid, trippy, and delightfully unique. As the verses progress, this mood is further heightened by hazy, modulating synth layers. Over the verses, an electronic drum groove propels the composition forward, but there is a lack of weight to the pulse, which helps build a sense of tension and anticipation.

During the chorus sections, the track takes a decidedly indie pop-rock turn, with the addition of electric guitar and an acoustic drum kit. These sections feel like a magnificent and satisfying release as the dynamics grow majestically. The electric guitar exudes a classic vibe as it punctuates the groove and sustains into the arrangement. When we hit the crescendo, these guitar tones, coupled with the weaving acoustic, beautifully shimmer.

The vocals of néomí have a palpable sense of melancholy as they deliver the well-written lyrics. Throughout most of the song, they are coated in a heavy layer of synthy, harmonising backing vocals. This modern touch, especially across the traditionally constructed choruses, heightens the sense of introspection, nostalgia, and longing that runs deep through the performance.

Inspired by a profound heartbreak, néomí adds: “‘so i let you’ is about one person I really couldn’t let go. I loved him and still love him so deeply that I just couldn’t bear the thought of living without him…. I wrote this song with a dear friend too, which makes it even more special. ‘so i let you’ is my very favourite track on the album. It hurts so much to sing that bridge, but it also feels liberating in a type of way. It gives me the strength to stand by the choices we’ve made, or so.”

so i let you (15th of june - evening)” is taken from néomí’s debut album, somebody’s daughter, slated for release May 3rd via [PIAS]. The album “presents 11 chapters in néomí’s coming of age story, which follows a young woman’s journey through trust, love, and ultimately self-healing through reflection.” Connect with néomí: Spotify | Instagram | Facebook
