Laura Lucas - “Let the Winter Have Me”
Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Laura Lucas has returned to us with “Let the Winter Have Me,” the latest single from her brand new LP, There’s A Place I Go.
“Let the Winter Have Me” begins completely stripped back and intimate, with Lucas professing her fears across the top of some softly strummed guitar. We have ended up featuring every tune she’s sent over to us and, once you press that play button, it is immediately obvious why this is so. Not only does Lucas possess a raw tenacity on folksy songwriting, but her delivery is consistently vulnerable and wonderfully authentic.
As the song progresses, additional elements join the arrangement, first with a subtle, ethereal pad, then cinematically lush with the arrival of the first refrain. At this point, the vocal performance has been remarkably multitracked, including an angelic harmony, with a reverberating kick drum marking the top of each bar. Deep notes from a bass and some gentle piano chords fill out the bottom layer of the production, allowing the song to evolve into auditory bliss.
Complete with a bridge and divine, dynamic moments of emotional ebb and flow, “Let the Winter Have Me” eases our decent into seasonal depression, bonding listeners with an introspective and cathartic soundtrack that will remain with them long after the song has ended. Lucas has once again crafted an elegant offering to the realm of indie folk, inviting us into her world with lyrics that enter the ears as though pages torn from a private journal.
About the new album, Lucas adds: “I sometimes think of songwriting as a place that I go, a sort of retreat from the rest of the world. That ‘place’ is the core of why I make music…These songs were written through some big life changes – moving to Australia, experiencing heartbreak for the first time, starting therapy, and learning to accept parts of myself I hadn’t before. I’ve become a lot more confident in who I am as an artist and as a person, and this album really documents that process of becoming.”
