Laura Lucas - “Wake Up, Breathe In”

Arriving on the blog with a fresh perspective is Canadian-born singer-songwriter Laura Lucas. Her latest track, “Wake Up, Breathe In,” is an indie folk song that encourages a look at the bright side of life, beckoning her listeners to find new beginnings inside of everything that ends.

As always, we tend to favor music that forces a long, hard look inward, and that is exactly what you shall find here. The song begins with the hopeful and encouraging strums from an acoustic guitar, already suggesting that the message here will be one of positivity. Truth be told, once Lucas begins singing, the song could be about anything– she has one of those voices that you could listen to all day, but it does not hurt that the lyrics are so insightful.

The production in “Wake Up, Breathe In” is very raw and for the first half of the track, it is as though Lucas is sitting next to you, offering a cheerful outlook on life. A synth pad grows in the distance and it sounds as though she has doubled the vocals on the refrain, but, for the most part, the track is reasonably sparse up until this point. And with the second verse, our ears collect some soft percussion that steadily moves the track forward.

For the latter half of the second verse, we are greeted with some soft vocal harmonies that successfully widen the sonic space of the arrangement– it is quite cinematic and a glorious sound to consume. The harmonies follow Lucas into the next chorus and if you’re an artist wanting to submit folksy songs to our blog, this is how they should be recorded, slowly and naturally building into a crescendo that leaves the listener completely satisfied.
