Kuni - “Showu”

Rome-based singer-songwriter Eleonora Danese, aka Kuni, once again appears on our blog with her latest release, “Showu,” a lo-fi number emblazoned with folksy textures.

We’ve come to realize that Kuni refuses to pigeonholed into one specific genre, as her work spans multiple musical realms, from alt-pop to shoegaze. With “Showu,” however, listeners are exposed to a more intimate side of her craft, as it opens with the raw strums of an acoustic guitar and a delicately double-tracked vocal performance.

Careful listeners will catch an earful of some digital artifacts that pad the arrangement, as well as some mellifluous vocal layers spanning across the soundscape. These layers seem to multiply as the track progresses, causing the production to gain a great deal of sonic width, which is especially impressive when considering the main musical element is the bare guitar.

Additional moments of gritty, electric guitar make their way to the surface of the song, and we find that they do a phenomenal job in keeping the listener engaged. But the true star of “Showu” is Kuni’s vocal, as she has the ability to weave her lyrics around the hearts of her listeners, gently leading them through the process of releasing the deadweight from their lives.

Showu” arrives ahead of Kuni’s sophomore EP, due out this year via Factory Flaws.
