Bella Cloud – “Spin”
San Diego-born, Melbourne-based Bella Cloud has just released “Spin,” a magnificent slice of introspective indie folk.
A simple, lo-fi rhythm sets “Spin” in motion, soon accompanied by dreamy chords from an acoustic guitar and a subtle, almost haunting melody from the piano. Straight out of the gate, it’s extremely clear that this tune has been captured in the studio with meticulous care, flowing into your ears as though you’ve been invited to watch it performed in front of you.
“Spin” rides the line between melancholy and a distinct sense of hope, and although the arrangement is soothingly hypnotic, it is ultimately Bella Cloud’s vocal performance that wins our hearts. Fans of Feist and Laura Marling shall marvel at her complete command of each soft and breathy syllable, with subject matter that explores the gravitational pull of emotion.
On the refrain, a lower harmony has been deployed, ticking off another box in the list of reasons “Spin” will be one of your new favorite songs. And if that were not enough, Bella Cloud incorporates a mouth trumpet between sections, which has got to be one of the most widely overlooked instruments on Earth. But it adds a dynamic sense of atmosphere that we truly cannot get enough of.
About “Spin,” Bella Cloud offers: “I wrote this song in a moment of emotional disorientation, the time before and after New Years is always a bit of a liminal time for me. On that particular New Year's day as I was reflecting on that last year it felt like being suspended in time between the present, past, and future, unable to differentiate one from another. So in a sense, Spin feels like both a eulogy for a period of time that encapsulated the ending of a really important relationship and my early twenties and also a prayer looking to the future that I might become more rooted within myself in the coming year.”
“Spin” is now available everywhere you get your music. And with an impressive cast of studio personnel – producer Shane Leonard (Anna Tivel, Humbird), Jenny Conlee (The Decemberists), Sydney Nash (Shook Twins), and co-producer Clara Baker – this track feels destined for many playlists in the months ahead.
