Zoya Zafar - “You Meant Nothing, Too”

Florida-based singer-songwriter Zoya Zafar first appeared on our blog with the delightful sounds of “Tunnel Vision;” today, she returns to us with the somberness of her latest release: “You Meant Nothing, Too.”

This track opens with the fantastic and resounding tones of an organ, interwoven with the delicate notes from softly pressed keys. The mood is dark and melancholic– just the way we like it– and it is not long before our ears are greeted by Zafar’s emotive voice. The opening line, “I look into your eyes, those black holes lead to nowhere,” is bound to instantly resonate with anyone who’s ever met the end of a love affair.

For the first half of “You Meant Nothing, Too,” the arrangement maintains a sparse existence, much like the shadow in which the absence of love will leave you. The melody is fully reliant upon Zafar’s vocal delivery and listeners are left to marvel at the authenticity of every word she breathes into the microphone. Before we are left to be lost in the emotional turmoil, the sweet sounds of an acoustic guitar appear as though a beacon of light.

At midpoint, a lo-fi beat emerges, providing a welcome dose of forward momentum as Zafar continues her storytelling. We would not be surprised if “You Meant Nothing, Too” found its way onto every playlist ever created after a bad breakup, though we also see it providing hope and strength for those who choose not to suffer in silence.
