Orion Shoals - “Keep on Running”

Los Angeles-baed Orion Shoals have just released the vibrantly bittersweet, heartland rock track “Keep on Running.”

The song opens to a delicate but bright electric guitar riff that sets a contemplative ambiance to the track. Underneath, an energetic oscillating synth builds a sense of tension which is complemented by the arrival of the resolute kick drum. Rhythmic texture is weaved in by acoustic guitar and piano, whilst a full-bodied bass slickly anchors the track to the ground.

The tension is excitingly released over the chorus sections. Here, the piano moves up an octave, creating a sense of lifting dynamics and intensity. The full drum kit also arrives, featuring an infectious shuffling hi-hat groove. These crisp hi-hats imbue a sense of urgency and playfulness that really set “Keep on Running“ alight.

The vocal delivery on this track has a timeless storytelling quality that reminds me of the vocal style of Bruce Springsteen. And just like The Boss, the performance is soulful, expressive, and beautifully unpolished. These anthemic vibes are firmly cemented by the backing “whoa” cries at the end.

This gorgeously melancholic track has all the hallmarks of a modern anthem. And while Springsteen’s spirit can be heard throughout, so can touches of classic 1980s U2., whether it is the chiming guitar work or the rousing backing vocal cries.

Keep on Running” ebbs and flows seductively and feels like an unstoppable juggernaut over the chorus sections. This track is the perfect addition to any music lover’s playlist.
