Very Nice Person - “Underwater”

From Malibu, indie pop/dance duo Very Nice Person arrive on the blog with “Underwater,” along with the announcement of their forthcoming LP, Don’t Worry, due out on January 30th.

Underwater” is a five-minute romp through a digital wonderland, complete with a lo-fi, aggressively-charged beat that is sure to tickle the dance-fancy of all indie lovers. The vibe is a conglomeration that spans a variety of inspiration, from Beck and Foster the People, to Cage the Elephant and Phoenix– basically, there is something for everyone.

Before the lyrical delivery emerges, “Underwater“ is already quite hypnotic, with an ear-worm of a melody brought forth by auxiliary vocal layers. By thirty seconds in, we dare you to try and refrain from bopping your head and tapping your feet– a departure from our usual, indie folk niche, but once you get this song into your ears, you will understand why we truly could not resist.

The main vocal has been drenched in glorious tube saturation, at times allowing the falsetto to enter your earholes as though the licks from a lead guitar. If that were not enough, elements are periodically removed from the arrangement for a wallop of dynamic variation, with highlights on the bass guitar and that persistent, pulsating rhythm.

Midpoint steers the track in an entirely different direction, abandoning the intense rhythm for a dreamlike state of existence. This section is a delicious mixture of cascading melodies and warped chords that will most assuredly carry you away from all of your earthly troubles– as far as we’re concerned, that’s exactly what any good song should do.

We encourage you to press play on “Underwater” as soon as you can find five minutes to yourself, then promptly share it with everyone you know. And while you’re at it, please join us in anticipating the late-January release of their LP. You can connect with Very Nice Person here: Spotify | Instagram | X | TikTok
