Specific Coast - “Lonely”
USA-based singer-songwriter Matt Dunne, aka Specific Coast, helps us ease into our seasonal depression with “Lonely.”
Specific Coast is no stranger to our blog, always seeming to nail our niche for acoustically-driven slices of melancholic indie folk. With “Lonely,” Dunne delivers a delicately finger-plucked acoustic guitar performance with double-tracked vocals over the top, dipping its musical toes into the realm established by artists such as Elliott Smith, Bon Iver, and Sufjan Stevens.
The track begins with “Man, it feels good to be lonely sometimes,” which is bound to resonate with most listeners, particularly those who reside in the northern hemisphere, as another winter knocks at the door. From there, Dunne walks us down a path of deep introspection, with chords from a piano arriving at the top of each bar.
Some notes from an electric guitar gradually emerge, adding a reverberating sense of depth and offering a bit of foreshadowing for the approaching full-band elevation. And once the rest of the instruments find their position, “Lonely” goes from intimately vulnerable to epically anthemic, completely utilizing every square inch of the sonic space.
