Daniel Del Russo - “When You’re Not Here”
Charlotte, NC-based singer-songwriter Daniel Del Russo arrives on the blog with “When You’re Not Here,” a wonderfully crafted morsel of folksy perfection.
“When You’re Not Here” first enters the ears via a lone acoustic guitar, carefully plucked to establish a vulnerable vibe, with subtle notes of muted banjo hovering just beneath the surface. From there, Del Russo’s vocal makes its way to the front, meticulously double-tracked for width, exactly the way we prefer it when it comes to offerings of the indie folk variety.
The song is built on a steady crescendo, slowly rising like a sonic tidal wave, first with a marvelous vocal harmony from Madelyn Rose Ciobanu, then, at midpoint, the arrival of a vintage-soaked rhythm section. An angelic falsetto glides over the treetops of the arrangement, allowing the listener to forget about the perils that come along with being human, even if only for the track’s three-minute duration.
To offer listeners a some ebb and flow, Del Russo gives us a brief dynamic break before sailing into the final throws. This is one of those songs that sound as though it’s gone straight from the microphone to your ears, with very little evidence of modern manipulation– something that is getting harder and hared to find.
