Mary Middlefield - “Two Thousand One”

When last we heard from Mary Middlefield, she was introducing herself to the world with her debut track, “Band Aid.” But, like many other artists, she’s caught the making-more-music bug and has decided to unveil “Two Thousand One.”

This track feels like a dream where everything seems very real. It is a captivating blend of ethereal vocals and kinetic acoustic guitars laid upon an enveloping atmosphere of lush synths and spacious background vocals. The lyrics tell of a broken relationship, while the pleasant melodies and harmonic movements of the song create such a comforting space that I can’t help but feel hopeful for her. To add complexity to the mood, there are beautiful transitions of harmonic tension that hint at the unresolved emotions. Middlefield sings, “I hate you so much, I’m starting to love you” as she takes her internal conflict and transforms it beautifully into song.

It’s definitely worth a listen and we are all eagerly waiting to see what she comes up with next.
