Under The Rug - “Turkey Vulture”

Indie/folk-rock band Under the Rug, from Austin, TX, have just released “Turkey Vulture,” a slow-burning anthem with a wistful feel. The leisurely opening sets the tone with drums and mandolin playing. A dreamy electric tremolo guitar elegantly plays, giving the song a great sense of depth. The guitar sounds are sparse but creative, adding to the song’s unique sound. A fuzzy guitar stabs on the beat in places, giving the song a bit of movement. The vocal performance is relaxed and effortlessly reaches falsetto in all the right places, and the addition of vocal effects, such as a backing vocal an octave lower, is nicely creative. It also adds an unease, which is also present in the lyrics. “Something in my body’s breakin’ / Wake up pale and shaking / Nothing is ideal / But I am fine.” The piano beautifully pads the song, adding a rich texture to the overall sound. I really like how clear every element is. The song is hard to pin down as to what it sounds like, giving hints of Eagles, but also something a lot darker– maybe QOTSA? The bass noodles as if McCartney himself is playing, adding to the song’s retro feel. Overall, “Turkey Vulture” is a well-crafted track. It is a song that is both effortlessly free, but paradoxically soul-baring in its lyrics. I think it’s a stunner.
