The Blaze Velluto Collection - “Friends”

From Canada, The Blaze Velluto Collection have just released “Friends,” a multi-layered, nostalgic trip, full of rich vocal performances and driving grooves.

Friends” begins with a slow building opening that brings to mind Oscar Peterson‘s timeless “How Insensitive.“ Bass pulses gently underneath as strings paint a dreamy atmosphere. A sense of expectation starts to grow as piano theatrically punctuates the melody. This long introduction perfectly complements the thrilling transformation that takes place when the song’s lyrics arrive. “Friends” develops a feel that I can only compare to Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical.

Crisp, clean electric guitar hypnotically arpeggiates, while an acoustic guitar adds depth and texture and enhancing the song’s groove. The track is propelled forward by the drums, which become more assertive with a new solid pace. Piano and strings continue to add a sense of refinement whilst enhancing the vintage qualities within the track. However, the musical element that is the star of “Friends” is the bass line. It energetically and vibrantly pulses underneath, giving the whole arrangement impact.

It’s impossible to describe this song’s captivating vocal performances in any manner that will do them justice. The singers portray a range of emotions, from exuberant joy to contemplative reflection, much like in a theatrical musical. The vocals shift effortlessly between intense belting to heartfelt, emotive performances. The track’s numerous harmonies and layers of voices foster a sense of togetherness, which ties in nicely with the lyrics related to friendship.

“‘Friends’ is an ode to these people that come and go in our lives,” says Blaze. “Some are there for a while, and some are here to stay. You might not see each other often, but when true love exists, they could be dead and still you'd know they're watching your back. Some individuals are there to serve a purpose, others appear momentarily and may be the best person you’ve ever met...circumstances. In our lifetime, we get to be all of them.”

Friends” is a unique gem of a song that takes inspiration from classic musical performances whilst giving hints of jazz and psychedelic rock. It is the third single from the group’s third LP, What's On Your Mind?, set for release on September 29th.
