Steven van Betten - “Mother”

USA-based artist Steven van Betten takes us on a journey through the relatable issue of trying to find one’s way in life with his new single, “Mother.” The song, which Steven wrote after a difficult day, was inspired by a poignant phone chat with his mother, who offered him comfort and support.

Mother” is pleasantly stripped-back, only including a few textures to support the vocal. Fingerpicked acoustic guitar forms the foundation for the song’s music. The tone is warm, bright, and gentle. Mellow key tones gradually enter the song, enhancing the warm and reflective atmosphere. The gentle keys gradually match the vocal’s melodic lines, which helps to bring weight to both the vocal and lyrics as the song approaches its conclusion.

The vocal on this track is intimate and delicate and delivers the lyrics beautifully. There is a very distinguished, heartfelt honestly. The artist describes his mother: “Everyone who knows my mom knows her sweetness, boundless love, and bursts of laughter that have been known to wake the neighbours. What people usually don’t see is her fierceness - an energy I return to whenever I need to get back in the saddle.”

Steven van Betten has produced a warm and relatable folk song with “Mother.” The track is gorgeously stripped-back and features some great storytelling. The song is taken his debut album, Friends & Family, which will be out in July.
