Gooseberry - “Orbit”

We often find ourselves declining to share indie rock songs that do not utilize the same tools as Jack White or Dan Auerbach, but Brooklyn-based Gooseberry have checked all of our boxes with “Orbit.”

They begin the song with just enough dirt on an electric guitar riff, setting a very gritty and bluesy vibe. The tone is rich and vibrant– the kind of sound that can generally only be crafted from the single coils of a Strat. After a couple bars, the vocals of Asa Daniels arrive in their tube-saturated glory and listeners are bound to find themselves immediately captivated by this bluesy rock anthem.

Although Daniels’ voice is drenched in some vintage-tinged fuzz, the lyrics are not hidden behind the effect– through the use of grit and falsetto, the talent here is very apparent. Then, suddenly, bandmates Evin Rossington (drums) and Will Hammond (bass) arrive and “Orbit” takes its true form, exploding into a fiery ball of rock and roll glory.

Fans of the aforementioned White and Auerbach, as well as those who dig on some Gary Clark Jr., are bound to find a new favorite here. Gooseberry’s knack for writing infectious riffs with emotionally charged vocal melodies will have you exploring the trio’s back catalogue before you’ve even had a chance to return from “Orbit.”
