Rose Brokenshire - “Like The Sun”
Revelstoke, British Columbia-based singer-songwriter Rose Brokenshire returns to the blog with “Like The Sun.”
This track gets underway with the crackling of old vinyl and a sample from some pop culture artifact that goes over our uncultured heads; however, Brokenshire doe not make us wait too long before the essence of her craft is revealed. Soft, warbling tones from a keyboard make their way across the soundscape, revealing a dreamy foundation to support the emotional weight of “Like The Sun.”
Of course, the intensity of the song’s sentiment is directly linked to the masterful vocal performance, delivering lines of lyrics that are bound to resonate with anyone who’s ever been caught up in a trauma bond: “Fix me when you break me… Tell me when you hate me… Kiss me like the sun…” For the first half of the track, Brokenshire serenades her listener via the perils of insecure attachment, securing the song’s position on our blog.
The second half of “Like The Sun” is void of lyrics and, instead, introduces a reverberating rhythm that is just as comforting as it is energetic. Angelic auxiliary vocal layers weave their way into the arrangement, ultimately ending with another sample from yesteryear.
“Like The Sun” carries less than a two-minute runtime, but, nevertheless, nestles itself quite deeply within your chest. And since we have not heard anything from Brokenshire since June of 2024, we hope that this tune is indicative that more of her music is on its way. That said, until we can confirm, be sure to give this one its fair share of spins.
