Ailbhe Reddy - “That Girl”

From Dublin, singer-songwriter Ailbhe Reddy returns to the blog with “That Girl,” the latest glimpse into the forthcoming album, Kiss Big.

Reddy has a knack for writing songs that occupy the sweet spot between indie rock and vulnerable folk, and all the evidence you need for this comes at the press of the play button. “That Girl” begins with a digitally pulsating rhythm, shortly followed by a dreamy vocal performance that is bound to gain the attention of those who gravitate toward the emotional weight of boygenius.

The deeper sounds of synthy bass soon arrive, followed by some angelic auxiliary vocals, offering listeners bit of foreshadowing for the approaching elevation in production. And before you know it, “That Girl” elevates into a fully-fleshed arrangement, complete with an energetic rhythm section and layers of ethereally reverberating guitars.

As “That Girl” progresses, its conclusion is preceded by a dynamic break that has been populated with swelling synths and more of the vulnerable vocal delivery that was present at the track’s onset. Of course, this makes the arrival of the epic finale to burst through any preconceived notion of a musical ceiling, leaving you with no choice but to have another listen.

About “That Girl,” Reddy adds: “This is one of the record’s emotional anchors. A study in how love shifts shape over time — how we start seeing each other less tenderly, and forget what we once adored. Inspired partly by Fleishman Is in Trouble, it reflects on memory, time, and how impossible it is to stay the same person inside a long love.”

That Girl” is now available everywhere, but be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the new album, Kiss Big, due for release on January 30. Connect with the artist here: Spotify | YouTube | Bandcamp | Instagram | Facebook
