Matilda Schyborger - “Any Day Now”

Swedish singer-songwriter Matilda Schyborger has just released the introspectively ethereal indie rock masterpiece, “Any Day Now.”

Any Day Now” is one of those rare ‘live’ songs that we cover here at the blog so you know that it is definitely worth your attention. Recorded in Stockholm with producer Klara Goliger, the track is a real slow burning, magical, sublime slice of breezy indie rock. Filled with introspection and cathartic releases this is an exceptional example of mature songwriting.

The composition is founded on charming, meandering electric guitar lines that weave intricately. It forms one hell of a hook that compels you to listen on. Ebbing and flowing and developing into shimmering chords that ring with gorgeous, reflective melancholy. Anchored by sturdy, unflashy drums and bass and evocative swells of sounds, these elements work beautifully in tandem to ensure the track delivers on all of its emotional payoffs.

Undoubtedly the vocals are the sweetest instrument. Wonderfully gentle and expressive and surrounded by angelic harmonies, parallels can be drawn here to both Linda Perhacs but also the rousing tones of Sharon Van Etten. Lyrically, the track is a masterclass in British indie inspired songwriting touching on ideas of escape, the beauty of the mundane and fatalistic optimism. By leaning into universal images and truths, Schyborger exquisitely heightens the emotion impact of the music.

Any Day Now” has a special charm that feels both old fashion but also contemporary. It is a composition that proves that the most powerful anthems aren’t always the loudest.
