Punk Rock Saturday!
Forget polished playlists and your boyfriend's algorithm. This week's Punk Rock Saturday doesn't care about trends or your For You page. Let’s talk about C.O.F.F.I.N, Jerkazoid, and Capture This. Turn it up.
C.O.F.F.I.N – “Sleep In It”
Sydney-based Children of Finland Fighting in Norway, aka C.O.F.F.I.N, start things off with some high-octane, bombastic ear candy: "Sleep In It." Beginning with a heavy-hitting groove on the toms, the track quickly erupts into a fierce blaze of power chords and Wattie Buchan-style vocals that come straight for the throat. The DIY spirit is exquisite, harkening back to the days before commercial gloss and autotune poisoned the proverbial well. Even with its Beach Boys-esque backing vocals and superb bass line, you won't find this one on mainstream radio, and that is precisely why we fell in love with it. Jerkazoid – “King of the Middle of Nowhere”
Keeping with the raw spirit of bona fide punk rock and roll, Portland's Jerkazoid have no interest in pandering to modern digital ballyhoo. Their latest joint, "King of the Middle of Nowhere," barrels into your ears as though it peeled directly off the walls of 1999, when every CD in my car bore the label: Asian Man Records. Highlights include a bloody-knuckled mix and master, bass pickin' akin to Jawbreaker's Unfun, and a top-of-the-lungs vocal performance. If you can't catch these guys at a show, you can probably find them at "ur mom's house." New LP incoming. Connect with the band: Bandcamp | Spotify | Instagram
Capture This – “Headspin”
Scratching more of a pop-punk itch, Denver’s Capture This have just released “Headspin,” a track that is bound to resonate with fans of Riot!-era Paramore. And since we’re certain they’re bored of that comparison, we’ll add that beneath the deliciously syncopated rhythm, the vocal performance carries the same earnest, punk-rooted conviction that made Greg Graffin a legend. The tune boasts a wide, spacious production, complete with seemingly endless layers of guitars and vocal textures, yet still clings to the rough edges that we’re always chasing. That's it. Support these bands, buy their records, attend their shows, and keep your local scene alive. See you next Saturday.
