Daniel Seth – “Same Songs”

From Charlotte, NC, singer-songwriter Daniel Seth has returned to us with “Same Songs: Singing Joni Mitchell,” a cinematic folk tune that delicately traces the threads of human connection.

If you’ve wandered through the pages of our blog, you’ll already know that Daniel won us over with the Gregory Alan Isakov-ness of his previous release, “Hindsight.” We’re more than pleased to say that the vibe remains warm and worn, like coffee from your favorite mug after you thought it had disappeared for good. “Same Songs” doesn’t sound over-polished, and aside from the atmospheric ambience, he might as well be performing it right in front of you.

The stars of this indie folk show are definitely Daniel’s voice and the acoustic guitar, both of which benefit from a production style that can only exist when one ignores the temptation to tinker with digital manipulation. The gentle finger plucks and occasional layered vocal textures bring to life this love letter to his wife. The absence of excessive gloss becomes a part of the song’s emotional power.

The midpoint brings orchestral strings and an understated rhythm, but, again, “Same Songs” never seems to lose the intimacy of its heartfelt core. The focal point is connection, and though we prefer the darker end of the spectrum when it comes to subject matter, we could listen to this one for the rest of the day and not feel that we’re missing out on anything. Press play. Enjoy the escape. Rewind. Unwind.
