Ohly - “If I Go”

Detroit-based singer-songwriter Ohly is back with “If I Go,” a delightful slice of indie folk that was produced by Dan Zott.

If you’ve been paying attention to our blog, you will already know that we typically feature dark and brooding sounds from the realm of folk music; however, the attention to detail within “If I Go” has instantly won us over, even if the track is, overall, a bit more upbeat than our usual brand of indie. Beginning with a gently strummed acoustic guitar, the track enters the ears as though Ohly is performing it right in front of you– one of our prerequisites for the genre.

As the song progresses, additional elements gradually make their way to the surface, at first teasing us with artifacts, then expanding into a fully-fleshed arrangement, complete with a vintage-tinged rhythm section and a vocal harmony that wonderfully juxtaposes the raw and genuine nature of Ohly’s voice. The production on the bass and drums is so deliciously creamy that one cannot help but imagine it being cut straight to two inch tape in some smokey, 1970s studio.

Additional layers of guitar arrive, bringing a fantastic sense of width to the sonic landscape, with a remarkable highlight on the gritty lead that appears on the song’s final third. From there, “If I Go” throws us another set of refrains before ultimately sending us on our merry way. We cannot recommend this one more highly.
