Nathaniel Paul - “Never”

For those of you looking for a raw and refreshing dish of introspection, look no further than the new single from Nathaniel Paul, “Never.”

This track is completely stripped-back, relying primarily on some remarkably plucked acoustic guitar to carry most of the arrangement. Pressing play on “Never” is like answering a phone call, even though you don’t recognize the number, and realizing there’s a friend on the other end. Then, three minutes later, you both walk away with the answers that you didn’t know you needed.

The song relies quite heavily on multiple layers of vocals to build its soundscape, which, as we’ve said many times in the past, is a method that we wish more artists would utilize. Let “Never” be proof that you do not need much more than a guitar and vocals to amass a production that is larger than any wave in the ocean of new music.

There are also some charming moments of harmonica in here, but the highlights, for us, are the grand swells of vocal harmonies that expand the track’s height, width, and depth. This tune explores the idea that time waits for no one and, once a moment has passed, nothing can ever really be the same again– at least, that’s our take on it. The cool part is that you get to press play and find your own answers, which is exactly the way it should be.
