Indy June - “Medicine”

When last we heard from Indy June, she had just delivered the dreamy “Like Me,” but, today, she returns to us with the lo-fi healing power of “Medicine.”

Indy June wastes no time in getting this one started– her sweet vocal begins as soon as you press that play button. Delivered over the top of some softly played, retro-infused guitar, the cinematic stage is quickly set, and she once again serenades us with her gentle, Clairo-like vibe.

It doesn’t take long before a harmony joins, adding a great deal of weight and width to her gentle voice. The only other sound is a bit of lead guitar that is played at the end of each line of lyrics. And just as the one-minute mark approaches, the production elevates with the addition of the rhythm section.

From this point on, the song becomes a fantastic offering to the world of indie pop. And we’re not quite sure if “Medicine” was written during the warmer months or not, but it sounds the way that summer should sound– it is not at all difficult to imagine cranking this one up a bit while carving across the land on any random highway.

Rhythm and vibe aside, the subject matter here is pretty heavy. And although the groove will likely sweep you away, the lyrics paint a picture to which, unfortunately, many can relate. “Medicine” explores the imbalance that can sometimes occur in a once trusting and tender relationship, and “how conflicting it feels to give yourself fully to someone who is only emotionally available on their own terms.”

This one will lead you down a path of introspection if you need it to do so, but it will also give you a steady and uplifting beat to get you through another day. Whatever means you choose, you cannot go wrong by pressing play.
