Indy June - “Like Me”

In “Like Me,” Indy June tackles the age-old dilemma of falling in love with a friend. Vocally akin to the likes of Phoebe Bridgers and Clairo, the lyrics sift through all of the uncertainties and confusion that come along with not knowing how the other person feels and imagining how perfect it might be if they felt the same.

Like Me” begins with a sweet, little harmony on some “oooohs,” which may seem like a simple element as you read this sentence, but we honestly wish that more artists would incorporate these song-enhancing treasures. They immediately pique the listener’s interest while also calling back to the days when music was unable to be augmented by digital production techniques.

The song builds upon these layers of vocals, adding some guitar as Indy June bares her soul. The emotion in her voice is genuine and the listener has no choice but to believe that this experience is presently occurring. And anyone who has ever been there will feel a myriad of emotions, like warning her to keep it all inside in order to avoid ruining the friendship, or screaming that life is too short for silence and to let the chips fall where they may.

The production widens as it follows its course, adding percussive elements and bass, without being overwhelming or sonically consuming. Quite honestly, “Like Me” would work both as a stripped-back, solo, coffeehouse performance or in a larger venue with a full band. The important aspect here is the love letter that Indy June has set to music, which is one that everyone has likely wanted to write themselves, at one point or another.
