meka - “What Once Was”
American singer-songwriter Melissa Lingo, aka meka, from Sacramento, California, has just released the sublime new indie folk track “What Once Was.”
“What Once Was” is an atmospheric acoustic gem that, in more ways than one, feels like it is celebrating the human spirit. Lyrically, the song is a homage to the archetype, myth and mischief of the hag. A celebration of the feminine spirit, power, and hope. Musically, it is founded around the spellbinding, weaving, tender tones of fingerpicked acoustic guitar.
The music feels familiar, like some deep cut off a 1970s indie folk classic, something we have become pleasingly accustomed to each time one of meka’s tracks land our way. Swells of violins gracefully dance around the modest, refined arrangement. Altogether there is a palpable sense of quiet grandeur running through the earthy intimacy of the composition.
The star, undeniably, is the radiant vocal of meka. Just as warm as the surrounding musical sounds, unshakable and wrapped in truly beautiful harmonies, the performance is a delight to listen to. It is a performance that could leave anyone with a pair of ears speechless, glowing amber hued warmth, emotionally tender cadence and imbued with a timeless sense of spirit.
Luminous and laced with a honeyed sense of nostalgia, “What Once Was” is taken from meka’s new album, The Rabbit, which is out today via Dumont Dumont. Make sure you head over to meka’s Bandcamp to pick up this stunning release on 12” vinyl.
