Leah Marlene - “Feel Like”

USA-based Leah Marlene’s latest single, “Feel Like,” is a refreshing indie-pop track that captures the essence of summer.

It’s difficult not to move to the pulse of this song, which is full of great surprises. First, we are given some warm, acoustic guitar, which establishes a gentle mood. The song then firmly changes into an indie pop beast of a record. The drums are stripped back, leading to the listener a nice rhythm, with the deep bass pulsating addictively underneath.

The song has so many great textures, which range from low, gritty electric piano noises to hints of synth notes that subtly fill any gaps that may appear in the arrangement. The infectious “der der der” backing vocal lines are the song’s major lyrical hook and one of its most recognisable aspects. The guitar work is particularly good as well and makes me think of the later stages of “Golden Arrow,” by electro duo DARKSIDE. The song is full of some really great dynamic breaks as well, allowing “Feel Like” to constantly evolve, but also grow in intensity towards the satisfying crescendo.

Leah Marlene’s vocals are outstanding, showcasing both her dynamic range and her ability to express a feeling of fun, but equally engaging are her backing vocal arrangements. “Feel Like” is a fantastic indie-pop tune that is going to pull you into the summer as soon as the drums kick in.
