Terra Lightfoot - “Kept You In My Pocket”

Terra Lightfoot returns to the blog with a sound so vibrantly vintage that you’ll swear you’ve taken a trip back to the late ‘60s. This latest tune, “Kept You In My Pocket,” is bursting with a dark, retro groove that will force you to immediately add it to all of your favorite playlists.

Pressing play on this number invites you into a musical world that is void of modern, digital manipulation. The reverberating guitar notes that begin “Kept You In My Pocket” effectively foreshadow the thick and creamy magic that follows, hitting you with a tight drum fill before establishing a fantastic, bouncing rhythm section. The sound comes complete with a grooving bass and accents that have been perfectly placed via piano.

With all of this retro ear candy in play, Lightfoot’s soulfully poised voice is the chef d'oeuvre. She effectively pours the lyrics across the arrangement in such a confidently smooth manner that we simply cannot get enough of it. And fasten your seatbelts for the refrain because her upper register is going to blow your freaking mind. Lightfoot possesses a hefty dose of raw vocal power, which will exquisitely engulf your entire existence.

Backing vocals are carefully utilized within “Kept You In My Pocket,” maintaining the authentic, retro soul vibe and we can already picture this one in any Tarantino-adjacent motion picture. This becomes even more obvious once the guitar lead arrives at around the two-minute mark, which is so thick with a vintage fuzz that we at first thought it was a horn section. Do not miss out on this one, people.

Lightfoot describes “Kept You In My Pocket” as a “dream in a dark dance club… It's knowing that you have fond memories of someone, enough to carry you through a time where you can't be with them, and choosing to remain in that half-reality/daydream state when you can't be together.” This is the third single from Terra Lightfoot’s forthcoming record, Healing Power, which is due for release in October.
