Shannon Netemeyer - “Forgive Me If I Stare Too Long”

Chicago-based indie artist Shannon Netemeyer returns to the blog with her latest epic release: “Forgive Me If I Stare Too Long.”

Not wasting any time at all, Netemeyer begins this tune with her delicate and angelic vocal atop a padding of atmospheric synth. A subtle harmony adds width to her voice, resulting in one of the most remarkable sounds this side of the Mississippi (we’re from Chicago; it’s just something we say). A percussive bass line emerges and “Forgive Me If I Stare Too Long” begins its steady ascent.

The beat that appears has all the characteristics of a live kit, which lends a fantastic juxtaposition between it and the predominantly electronically-driven arrangement, not to mention Netemeyer’s dreamy lyrical delivery. Moments of ethereal backing vocals sporadically materialize, adding an even deeper layer to the song’s already mesmerizing production.

Additional tracks of synth are brought to the song’s surface and listeners will find themselves wondering just how many levels exist within this high-rise of a tune. Between the dynamic shifts and transcending vocals, “Forgive Me If I Stare Too Long” will carry you away on a journey through Netemeyer’s raw and bare soul. It shakes you by the shoulders, and leaves you no choice but to keep returning to the play button.
