Josaleigh Pollett – “Like a River”

Singer-songwriter Josaleigh Pollett, from Salt Lake City, USA, returns to the blog with the deeply textured folktronica track “Like a River.”

Like a River” is a song that is difficult to pin down. It feels more like a mood piece than a traditional track. Suspended between dream and memory, the track floats through a twilight state of reflection and longing, evoking the sensation of being half-awake, drifting through fragmented memories, lying in bed at 3 a.m. staring at the ceiling, or watching a sunrise after a euphoric night out. It throws genre out of the window and is unapologetically electronic. Its fusion of organic instrumentation and electronic textures are reminiscent of the uneasy, mellow, hypnotic compositions of Darkside and The Chemical Brothers.

Anchored by warm acoustic guitar, the song pulses with gentle confidence as waves of glitch-soaked psychedelia ripple through its arrangement. Constantly shifting and evolving, it becomes a sensory experience for the ears, mind, and soul. Josaleigh Pollett’s vocals wander through the music with an intimate, introspective quality, as though trusting and confiding in you. Surrounding this narrative-driven delivery are lush, haunting harmonies that create the feeling of spiritual release.

On the track, the artist elaborates: “Like a River is about an attempt at quieting the noise of my own thoughts and of a chaotic world around me in order to try to be more resilient. A too-late-coffee-fuelled yellow-light-lit silent moment - having arrived at myself just in time to feel my pulse speed up and the news of the day sweep me away into frothing rapids. Hoping for the peace of a quiet river bank, only to remember that a river is swift, chaotic, and ever-changing the earth beneath it. Inspired by Paul Simon’s Peace Like a River- a song I’ve always held in my heart as a beautiful protest song.”

This spectrally atmospheric track is taken from Josaleigh Pollett‘s forthcoming album, If I Let It Quiet, releasing July 24th. “Like a River” is out now via Audio Antihero.
