Jess Kerber - “Tropical Storm”

From Nashville, Tennessee, singer-songwriter Jess Kerber returns to the blog with “Tropical Storm,” the latest singles from her brand new LP, From Way Down Here.

At the press of the play button, “Tropical Storm” is brought to life with a barebones percussion groove that supports the sparse notes from an acoustic guitar. Before long, the rhythm expands to include a fully-fleshed beat, perfectly supplying the tune with an irresistible heartbeat. The drums are occasionally cut, revealing a more intimate vibe of guitar and vocals.

And speaking of the vocal performance, it should be noted that Kerber has one of those voices granted by the universe, allowing her deliver emotionally-clad lyrical content without the crutches of digital production ballyhoo. As listeners, we find ourselves hanging onto every word as though the only truth left in the world. Other than the occasional saturation of reverb, her delivery is left internally raw.

On the back half, the lyrics momentarily subside for more of an auxiliary approach, which gloriously aligns with the fuzzy notes from a lead guitar. In the end, “Tropical Storm” returns to ints more intimate and vulnerable origination, leaving listeners with no choice but to have another listen.
