Far Caspian - “Autofiction”

Irish songwriter Joel Johnston, aka Far Caspian, has just released the intimate, hushed, and heartfelt indie folk track, “Autofiction.”

Autofiction,” described by Far Caspian as “a simple love song,” is dedicated to his partner, who also contributes airy backing vocals on this disarming little number… and disarming is the only way I can describe it. As if listening to an Elliott Smith gem that has been forgotten by time, the mood is designed to capture your heart.

Bar subtle percussive, bass and key embellishments, the arrangement is tastefully stripped back relying on the dry, bright but warn in tones of the guitar to drive the music forward. Far Caspian does not hide behind any glossy production or beard stroking uses of effects to hold your attention.

The use of rhythmic texture only serves to make the recording feel even closer and unfiltered. Almost as if the recording is preserving an honest, home demo-like atmospheric, or as if the song is being performed beside you. Even then there is always the underlying feeling that the music may die away before it reaches your ears.

Heightening the unguarded quality of the music is the whispered, melodically tender vocals. Flowing almost as if listening to a conversation, the performance is something that never demands your attention, yet you cannot help but be immersed by it into some dreamlike state.

Alluring, beautifully honest and tastefully produced, “Autofiction” is taken from the album of the same name slated for release July 25th via Tiny Library Records.
