Denver-based singer-songwriter Emily Eicher, aka Best Man, has just sent over two new tracks from her new LP: “Shit On” and “Tough Winter.”
Fans of Julien Baker and The Japanese House will find themselves right at home amidst the gentle, hypnotic nature of “Shit On,” with a steady beat that propels the quiet chords of an acoustic guitar. Rising waves of synth permeate the distant soundscape, providing a lush, cinematic escape into the world of Best Man.
“Shit On” is a song whose lyrics fall in line with the title of the LP, People Pleaser, as the narrator apologizes for anything and everything in order for an opportunity to feel safe in the arms of another. And while the subject matter, alone, is enough to pique the interest of listeners, it is Eicher’s vocal performance that will ultimately win their hearts.
The semi-ghostly, multilayered vocal textures support the aforementioned Julien Baker reference, with moments of sublime Mazzy Star-ness that occasionally resonate in the depths of the verses. Brimmed full of emotion, with a cascading time change in the final third, “Shit On” is bound to become one of your new, favorite songs.
And while we’re talking about your new, favorite songs, let us introduce you to “Tough Winter,” a track that is a touch more upbeat than “Shit On,” with shimmering layers of reverberating guitar. That said, there is still enough melancholy pumping through its veins to find a quiet spot within our niche for this variety of indie.
Eicher’s vocal performance carries the same emotional weight as the former track, but “Tough Winter” possesses a few more occasions that include a wondrous harmony– it is nearly omnipresent and we truly cannot get enough of the way it deliciously widens the stereo spread. “Tough Winter“ is simply two verses and two choruses, but its gentle crescendo will most assuredly keep you coming back for multiple listens.
