Iris King – “I did, I will, I do”
London-based indie artist Iris King has just released "I did, I will, I do," a folk pop meditation on choosing stability over chaos.
“I did, I will, I do” arrives like a marriage between Mazzy Star’s hazy dream pop and Phoebe Bridgers’ intimate indie folk, wonderfully pairing hypnotic atmosphere with quietly devastating emotional integrity. This is due in part to the magnificently dreamy vocal performance, but also to the way in which the arrangement has been wrapped in a thick layer of reverb.
The bones of “I did, I will, I do” are primarily constructed from acoustic guitar and vocals, but beneath them lies a deep, ambient sea that carries the sound to the farthest reaches of the sonic landscape. Additional vocal textures are strewn across the production like low-lying clouds enveloping a mountain of vulnerability. Paired with the synthy textures and moments of lead guitar, we’ve found it incredibly difficult to stop listening.
For the first two and a half minutes, the song is completely devoid of percussion, allowing it to move freely with the human spirit. However, once that steady rhythm arrives, it’s easy to picture “I did, I will, I do” as the soundtrack to leaving your past in the rearview.
