Mind Tides – “Intertwined”

Oslo-based trio Mind Tides return to the blog with the effortlessly cool, psychedelic Latin rock track “Intertwined.”

Intertwined” is a melting pot of genres, blending psychedelic music with Latin, prog rock, and disco. It’s the kind of fusion and smooth, hazy atmosphere you automatically associate with Santana. It has that airy, mellow blissed-out vibe that seems to have almost been lost since the 1970s, making you feel as though you’re sitting on a beach while staring into a slowly turning kaleidoscope.

The music is built on Latin rhythms that swing and sway like waves breaking on the shore. A warm, rounded electric piano gently moves beneath, while the bass gradually injects an increasingly prominent 1970s disco groove that compels you to get up and move. The star of the show is undoubtedly the lead guitar. The playing is slow, deliberate, and deeply expressive. In many respects, it doesn’t feel like traditional guitar soloing so much as a performance made up of distinct, memorable licks that seem to express something almost spiritual. It’s also a lovely touch to hear the guitar panning from side to side, recalling earlier 1960s psychedelic production.

The music naturally brings Santana to mind, but there are also hints of BALTHVS and Orions Belte. In the middle section, the song settles into a peaceful spell, dropping the tempo and evoking Pink Floyd, particularly The Dark Side of the Moon. The atmospheric sound effects, however, also bring Animals to mind.

The vocal is breezy, wispy, and delicate. The melody reminds me of something, but for the life of me I can’t quite place which record it’s bringing to mind. The lyrics explore the delicate web of life, humanity’s relationship with the natural world and reminds us that everything on Earth is interconnected.

The result is a gorgeous record that amalgamates a variety of influences from the past into something that feels genuinely fresh. Breezy, vibrant, and naturally swinging, “Intertwined” is taken from debut concept album, Inward Waves, slated for release later this year.
