Hannah Potter – “Judith’s House”

Naarm/Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Hannah Potter has just released “Judith’s House,” a folksy meditation on returning to yourself after profound loss.

This one drifts directly into your bones, beginning with the lone, melancholic sound of a lo-fi electric guitar. Even before Potter’s vocal arrives, “Judith’s House” leaves an intimate first impression, feeling less like a performance and more like a private journal entry.

A steady, slow-burning rhythm finds its place in the arrangement, careful not to overshadow the song’s fragile atmosphere while instilling momentum just the same. Drones from the keys cast a hazy shade of ambiance, filling the remaining spaces of the production like a vast emotional landscape.

Hannah Potter’s vocal performance is nothing short of magnificent, with her breathy, Cat Power-esque delivery at times barely rising above a whisper. She has the gift of making you not only believe every word, but feel the meaning behind them, a quality that more than earns the song’s five-and-a-half-minute runtime.

If you are looking for an escape from the mundane and into a mellifluous world of emotional release, pressing play on “Judith’s House” costs far less than therapy.

Judith’s House” was recorded live at The Rat Shack with Rob Muinos, co-mixed by Potter and Muinos, and mastered by Mikey Young. Connect with Hannah Potter here: Bandcamp | Spotify | Instagram | Facebook
