In Between Years - “The Giver”

In Between Years have just released the beautifully unusual “The Giver” and I love it.

The acoustic guitar that opens the song is slow and grooving, while the deep bass creates a strong foundation for the other instruments to build upon. The song’s mesmerizing ambience is heightened by the slow, continuous beat of the drums. There is a slow head moving pulse which, for me, makes the song irresistible.

The song is stripped back but there are a lot of really great sounds. The saxophone arpeggios give the song a distinctive and compelling atmosphere over the main sections, for instance, but it is the vocals and backing vocals that give this song a really great and unusual texture.

The song’s final section features a wonderful rhythmic transition. The guitars start to slowly and gradually pick up the tempo. The tension of the moment is increased by the peculiar background vocals and saxophone that are added to the growing crescendo. There is a Radiohead come Zappa feel to this song and it is really playful.

The Giver” is a brilliantly stripped back song that has a real classy psychedelic vibe to it. The track is the second single from their debut album, My Roots, which I am definitely going to check out… and so should you!
