Evelyn - “Three Eagles”
California-born, New York-based singer-songwriter Dani Lencioni, aka Evelyn, is back with “Three Eagles,” a tune that sifts through turmoil for some semblance of meaning.
“Three Eagles” first consumes its listener within a gritty, lo-fi ambience populated by piano chords and Evelyn’s raw vocal performance. The entire production has been drenched in a live tape delay that adds a flavorful, vintage sheen, imbuing the song with a richly nostalgic and Beatles-esque undertone.
From there, a soft rhythm emerges, complete with drums and bass, providing a steady pulse that propels “Three Eagles” forward, despite its overall melancholic vibe. It is here where we are doused in hints of Sharon Van Etten and Cat Power, allowing the track to wrap its contemplative fingers around our listening experience.
All the while, a delicate pad from an organ saturates the arrangement. In the distance, there is a ghostly, harmonic melody that rises above the surface of the soundscape. All of this combines to make “Three Eagles” one of those modern recordings that grasps tightly to the authenticity of yesteryear– something that seems to be getting more and more uncommon as we slowly drift into a world that’s been oversaturated with autotune and digital manipulation.
If you are scouring through the stacks of contemporary releases for any evidence of genuine musical craft, we highly encourage you to press that play button. “Three Eagles” will undoubtedly find a permanent home in the gray matter of any true fan of legitimate songwriting.
