Chris Williams & Kid Reverie - “Haunt Me”

USA-based duo Chris Williams & Kid Reverie (Steve Varney) return to the blog with “Haunt Me,” a song whose title tells you exactly what it’s going to do.

We’ve long been fans of Kid Reverie’s work with Gregory Alan Isakov, so it’s only natural that we would be drawn towards anything with his name on it. And once you combine the endless talent and remarkable craft of Williams, it makes for one hell of a dreamy indie folk concoction.

Haunt Me” begins with some barebones orchestration, gently fading in to reveal a ghostly vocal performance. Meticulously penned lyrics enter the ears as though a deep exploration of love and memory, with a deliberate emphasis on the tension between hope and just how temporary everything is.

For the first half of “Haunt Me,” the stripped-down arrangement remains suspended on a ghostly plane of existence, allowing listeners to thumb through a seemingly eternal spectrum of emotions– a soundtrack to the internal perils that come along with being human.

Midpoint marks the introduction of additional elements, including some deep notes from the bass, chords from a piano, and the gentle pulse of percussion. All of these sounds ultimately rise like a mammoth wave, incorporating additional layers of vocals and thunderous crashes of cymbals, until, all at once, the song returns to the sparseness of its origin.

We hope that “Haunt Me” means that more music from Chris Williams & Kid Reverie is on the way, but we fully intend to enjoy this one until it becomes part of our DNA.
