Annie Schultz - “MIS”
From Minneapolis, MN, alt-folk artist Annie Schultz returns to us with “MIS,” a decent into the hell that is self-sabotage.
Many of us have been there, and perhaps that’s why this song is bound to become one of your new faves– something sonically tangible to place with the way in which humans often find themselves in emotional turmoil and catastrophe. But even if you’re one of the lucky ones, we are willing to bet that you’ll find something to love within “MIS.”
Across the soft, droning tones of an organ, Schultz delivers one hell of a vocal performance, wrapped tightly in a blanket of raw emotion, and, somehow, filling our ears with the remnants of our own individual pasts– something generally reserved for the likes of Elliott Smith or Adrianne Lenker. Her voice comes with heaps of bonafide authenticity, allowing each and every word to ring as the truth.
In the distance, additional vocal textures are added to stretch the sound throughout the sonic landscape, at times coming close enough to provide a haunting harmony to the main line. And although the song only has a runtime that barely breaks two-minutes, we are confident that “MIS” will stay with you long after it ends, just like the agony of replaying all of your past mistakes.
