Charm of Finches - “Atlantis”

Charm of Finches are Melbourne-based sisters Mabel and Ivy Windred-Wornes and they have just released the enchantingly mesmerising “Atlantis.” You will be left enthralled by this beautiful, meditative, and cinematic indie-folk track.

Atlantis” is founded on delicate, sustained piano that instantly immerses you in warm, reflective tones. The haunting sensation of the music is amplified by the layers that are carefully applied on top. Longing string layers add a sense of elegance and yearning, while a gentle percussive groove evokes a sense of wistful dreaming and bass creates the sensation of rhythmic sway.

As the song progresses, the use of percussion and subtle key elements heighten the cinematic qualities of “Atlantis.” This satisfyingly climaxes at the crescendo with electronic percussion enhancing the track’s groove. The vocals are simply sublime. The wonderful performance is tinged in melancholy as it gracefully floats over the composition.

As the second vocal joins, the interplay is dreamy and full of rich, sweet harmony. At the halfway mark, enchanting backing vocal layers are added that give a sense of space. All of this culminates to a performance that almost feels spiritual.

Charm of Finches describe the meaning behind the track’s lyrics: “Atlantis is a place to retreat to when overcome by intense emotions. We’ve witnessed friends we care about sinking into dark places, like being underwater. Water has always been a recurring motif in our music to express the fluidity and intensity of feeling.”

Atlantis” is quite simply a masterpiece. You will find it hard not to be swept away by the stunning vocals and dreamy cinematic textures. This is the first taste of Charm of Finches‘ upcoming fourth studio album.
