Bre Kennedy - “North”

If you’ve been keeping up with the blog, you have, no doubt, gathered that we certainly favor songs that explore darker subject matter. However, to prove (to ourselves) that we can hang with the most positive of tunes, please allow us to introduce you to Bre Kennedy.

Many of you have likely already heard a song or two of hers, considering the fact that she has garnered millions of streams on numerous releases, with her monthly listeners closing in on half a million as well. This is not luck, my friends; this is due to her talent for crafting songs to which her listeners can empathize. Her latest track, “North,” will no doubt appeal to those same masses and reach seven figure streams in no time, with its message of self-reflection and clarity– which is, coincidentally, the title of her latest EP.

“North” is indie folk at its very finest, opening with a delicately plucked acoustic guitar before being joined by Kennedy’s remarkable vocal. No immediate comparisons come to mind, but, at the same time, her voice feels very familiar– like locking eyes with a total stranger that you swear you’ve met before, perhaps only in passing, perhaps in a past life. And this is true for the first part of the track, while her voice is soft and seemingly fragile. But when she starts to open up, the control she has on the vibrato in her falsetto may cause you to recall the work of Anais Mitchell. The message here is one of hope and empowerment and we are delighted to be sharing it with you on this page.

Upon writing the songs for Clarity, Kennedy adds, “I sat down, and it was like getting rid of old clothes, stories, and expectations… I’ve become a different version of myself. After the past two years, I feel super revitalized. This spring cleaning led to a metamorphosis. I’m starting to get clarity. It’s ironic because when I wrote the music, I was begging for it! I’ve changed a lot, though. I’m getting to know the person I am now.”
