Big Sleep - “Crude”
Dublin’s Big Sleep have just released “Crude,” a shimmering and lushly layered indie alt gem that drifts with effortless charm.
“Crude” is a riveting, immersive listen that sweeps you away on its breezy groove and relaxed charm. It will definitely please the fans of The Libertines, The Lathums, the Arctic Monkeys and Interpol to name but a few. Though these comparisons hardly do the song or group justice. It sidesteps the plodding genre pitfalls that can occur with indie/alt rock. “Crude” is a blend of darn good melodies and lush textural guitar work. Think deep, caramel like Peter Hook bass lines, peppy bouncing guitars that flirt with shoegaze, all wrapped up in what I can only describe as vibe of wide-eyed, luxurious cynicism.
Vocally, again there are definite hints of The Libertines’ Pete Doherty emanating from the soulful, casual delivery. We have elongated syllables in all the right places and a constant vibe of charismatic fragility which is nothing short of magnetic. But this isn’t the ramblings of a coked-out frontman with a skin and bones supermodel girlfriend on his arm. The production is not sloppy; the vocals do not stray or are in anyway lacklustre. This is pure reflective cool.
The poetic lyrics also perfectly match the reflective music exploring themes of love, regret, vulnerability and the messy pursuit of connection. On the songs meaning Big Sleep add: “It’s about someone whose innocence remains intact, and whose heart stays open, even after the world hasn’t been kind to them”
